With the encouragement of his parents, Gilmour learned to play the guitar and eventually joined the blues rock band, Jokers Wild. He had been to other bands such as Bullitt, and Flowers before he was approached by Pink Floyd's drummer, Nick Mason and accepted to be a part of the band in 1968.

 

 

While with the band, they became popular for their hits such as Another Brick in the Wall, One of My Turns, and Take It Back. Gilmour had also produced one of the Pink Floyd's album A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Meanwhile, his four albums when he tried out to be a soloist became successful and did collaborations with other artists. He received the Ivor Novello Lifetime Contribution Award and outstanding contribution to music by the Q Awards in 2008

His companies, David Gilmour Music and David Gilmour Overseas, paid him £36m from 1988 to 1999. The two companies had a total of £5.7m net assets in 2009-10. Gilmour gave the £3.6m proceeds of his London house sale to charity and has homes in Sussex and Greece. A deal on digital royalties agreed with EMI in January 2011 will benefit all the former Pink Floyd members.
