Tiger King star Joe Exotic has launched his GoFundMe to raise the capital he needed to pay back Carole Baskin as per the ruling of the court for the trademark lawsuit between them. The fundraising campaign was initiated by Joe Exotic’s lawyer, John Phillips, who aims to raise $500,000 to pay back Baskin. The fundraising campaign has mentioned that the funds will be used for the expenses of his cancer treatments and for the legal costs of his battle against Carole Baskin.
The campaign was launched last January 5, 2022 and the first ten hours of the fundraising campaign has only generated $25, however as of this writing, he has already raised $15,987 with $100,000 goal from 251 donations. Joe Exotic stated on his GoFundMe page that he cannot get a fresh start until he gets to pay back the $500,000 he owed Carole Baskin. He added that the said fundraising campaign is set up to pay off Carole and finally move on from the legal battle between them. He also mentioned that the excess money that the fundraising will produce would be donated to the efforts of conserving tigers and other charitable causes such as Operation Smile.
Joe Exotic whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage was incarcerated in 2020 for killing and abusing animals numerous times. He is also facing charges for conspiring to hire two hit men who were tasked to kill his nemesis, Carole Baskin. Their battle started last 2013 when Exotic was asked by the U.S. District judge in Oklahoma to pay Baskin $1 million for using some logos and images which was similar to the ones that Baskin’s animal sanctuary owns. Baskin also received the ownership of the popular Joe Exotic's G.W. Zoo which she sold afterwards for about $140,000. The sale reportedly has legal stipulation that the property cannot be used as a zoo and should not have activities relating to Tiger King.
Exotic has already served two years of his 22 year sentence however he still needs to pay Carole Baskin. It was also reported that the sentencing for Exotic will be reduced because federal appeals court that the ruling to his previous sentencing was wrong. He was set to receive new sentence on January 28 under the U.S. District Judge Scott Palk who’s assigned to do the resentencing. According to Exotic’s lawyer, John Phillips, Exotic is delaying his cancer treatments until after his resentencing. It was announced by the Tiger King star last November 2021 that he had a prostate cancer.
