At the age of 28, Ray Lewis III, a former college football player and the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis, has passed away.
Lewis’ younger brother Rahsaan Lewis broke the news on social media, posting a tribute to his verified Instagram story, saying, “Really can’t believe I’m even typing this but RIP big brother.”
Details regarding Lewis III’s cause of death have not been disclosed.
Lewis III attended Lake Mary Prep High School in Florida and subsequently played college football at the University of Miami, Coastal Carolina, and Virginia Union.
Initially a running back in his home state of Florida, Lewis transitioned to playing cornerback at Coastal Carolina and Division II Virginia Union.
“He was a great young man and an even better teammate,” said Virginia Union associate head coach Diego Ryland to TMZ Sports, adding, “The entire Virginia Union University community is praying for the family as they deal with the loss of Ray.”
Ray Lewis, aged 48, had a successful career with the Baltimore Ravens from 1996-2012. He retired as a two-time Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl 35 MVP, a two-time defensive player of the year, and a seven-time first-team All-Pro. In 2018, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
